Elly’s work focuses on land use and natural resource management in rural communities. With considerable experience conducting community consultations and community-based research initiatives in Manitoba and Nunavut, Elly works with First Nations and rural municipalities to do resource planning, management and environmental assessment. Commited to tailoring landscapes to people’s physical and cultural needs, Elly works with aboriginal communities and traditional knowledge-holders to document, communicate and apply their perspectives in land and resource management. She has spent the last several years as an advisor to York Factory First Nation, supporting environmental assessment work, research, negotiations and consultations related to hydro-electric development on Manitoba’s Nelson River.
Elly holds an Honours Degree in Environmental Biology from Queen’s University and a Master’s Degree in Natural Resources Management from the University of Manitoba. Her Master’s research explored the concept of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, or Inuit Traditional Knowledge, and its role in managing Sirmilik National Park. She explored how youth and elders in Pond Inlet, Nunavut understand, transmit, adapt and apply Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in the modern world. Elly is an avid skier, cyclist, canoeist, hiker and camper, who volunteers as the head coach of the Winnipeg Wolverines Special Olympics soccer team.
